Names and Faces (English)

PUBLISHER NOTICE :
*this post is labeled ENGLISH, so will be written in English*

I am not trying to be a racist.  I had to say that first, because some part of my post will talk about some specific races, and it is POSSIBLE that some of you will find it offensive, but now you know I DON’T MEAN IT, it is simply what i think about them.  :D

Okay, talk about names.  What is your first respond if you find a man from India named *let’s say some common English name* Albert?  ”Is that your real name?” and “What is your real Hindi name?” are two common responds.  At least that’s what i managed to observe the past few weeks.  One of my friend, from India, has the name “Justin”, which is very “English”.  And i asked him “what is your real name?”.  And he replied “that’s my real name”, and then he said “Gosh, why don’t people trust me that it is my real name?  It’s irritating!”.  I felt sorry for doing so, but that’s the truth.  I don’t know how deep globalization has effected some trivial things such as names, but i think it is already in the level to make people “think English name sounds cool”.

Same thing applied to Indonesian, right?  Back at 70s (even though i was still not born, but my “older colleagues” told me so), English names in Indonesia seemed like something weird.  Seeing the names Joko and Mulyoto seems very normal.  Nowadays, person with such names maybe will be called “old-fashioned names”, and the names such as “Kevin”, “Leon”, or “Martin” sounds normal.  I don’t know what happened to those “nationalism” we used to boast about.  :D.  Anyway, my self, named DWIKA.  I loved my name, since it seemed……GENUINE.  I always boasted to my friends about “you will only find my name if you search it in Facebook”, but yesterday i tried to search it once more, and i found 3-4 people with the same name -_-a .  But still, i have to “change” my name here in Melbourne, into D (Yeah, pronounced DEE), to make it easier to read and pronounce.

Okay, now about FACES.  People are born with faces, whether they like or dislike it.  We put the plastic surgery aside, okay? :p.  People can do nothing about their faces, since it was granted upon birth.  And i never even once in my whole life, regret why do i have a face like this.  I don’t want to say it’s good, but at least i don’t find anything to be ashamed of.  I have two eyes, one nose with two nostrils, one mouth with two lips, and all my teeth are perfectly fitted (except for the fact that one of my front teeth is fake :p).  But lately, i got some problem with my face.   No, it doesn’t spray hot lava or anything, and it is still the same of what it is years ago (except it got fatter :D ).  But, some people (friends, colleagues, whoever) seems to mistook me for someone else.

“he looked like G*****, don’t you think?” — a friend in Melbourne, today.
“are you Chinese?  You look like Chinese” — a hairdresser, yesterday
“encik dari Malay belah mane?” — a stranger i met at a class, days ago
“you looked like S****” — my mom

Okay, i admit it.  I am a Chinese Malaysian, that is an unowned kid from G*****’s father and S****’s mother.  HAHAHA.  Of course not.  I am Indonesian, with Chinese blood flows inside me, and my older brother is not G nor S, his name is Eka, and he doesn’t look like either of G or S.  Prototyping seemed to be in trend nowadays.  -_-a.  Once when i was doing my assignment, a Chinese guy asked me some questions in Chinese.  Then, after he finally understood that my face showed an irregular amount of “i don’t understand”, he asked me “you are not a chinese? sorry then”.  Jerk.  Haha…
